We take just finished this stew, I was going to take a motion picture just it didn't last long enough for that! I took other reviewers advice and added spices. I added nearly two tablespoons of rosemary, a tsp of garlic, tsp of parsley, common salt and pepper, a teeeny sprinkle of thyme and a half teaspoon of italian seasoning. Thanks for the recipe :) Oh besides...I kinda started it wrong. I cooked the meat as said, and then I put information technology in h2o with four oxo cubes...so let it all soak for near an hr on low heat since I was cooking it on the stove. then I added my potatoes I used baby new potatoes so I didn't have to peel (ha!) so I mixed the tomato plant paste with some water and another oxo cube, and then added it to the stew then finally added the can of beer. Will defo...DEFO be making this over again. Thank yous once again!

Made this in the ho-hum cooker and added celery and swede.. great recipe.

My family loves this recipe. I've constitute that some rosemary garlic seasoning really pulls it all together and gives it a great flavor. The only other change I make is deadening cooking it on the stove. It makes the whole house smell great on a cold wintertime's 24-hour interval.
eleven/06/2011
This was a cracking stew but as others said, needed some spicing. Only change was I added the tomatoe paste to the skillet used to brown the beef for 20 secs to get rid of the tinny taste and then added the beef goop and deglazed the skillet. Pour into crock pot.

I fabricated this in the slow cooker on high for half dozen hours and it was delicious. Easy and elementary the style Irish stew should exist - no need for fancy ingrediants. I follwed the recipe exactly except that I added 1 cup of fresh mushrooms when in that location was about ii hours of cooking fourth dimension left.
07/28/2009
I felt that the recipe didn't have enough liquids. I added two cups broth. I also reduced the stout to six ounces as I had some very stiff tasting beer. The result was a very mild and delicious broth with just the correct amount of stout taste. It was very good.
03/18/2006
I fabricated this recipe on St Patrick'due south mean solar day for my family and only added ii xtras leeks and parsnip and yet my family felt it was very bland. I would definately add seasonings to this.
05/27/2009
It was a not bad recipe only, the stout beer was way to stout for my family. Gave it a wangy sense of taste that my kids didnt enjoy much at all.
09/21/2006
It was adept. I added salt, pepper, and seasoning table salt to it, merely that is just because we similar salty food. I will definitely make again. My cousin wanted the recipe so he could hand it out to everyone. I served it with home-made sourdough bread, although wheat bread would be skillful. Would also exist outstanding in bread bowls.
ten/28/2011
Fabulous recipe. I served this with garlic mashed potatoes lining the bowl (just like my local Irish gaelic pub serves it), and it was absolutely delicious.
x/04/2010
Really great stew, however transformed information technology more into a french stew past replacing the beer with red wine, and calculation parsley. As well I took out veggies and meat at the stop, placed information technology in a serving dish and and so boiled downward/thickened the remaining liquid to pour over the stew. Delicious.
03/18/2008
I made this recipe, using ingredients called for, except that I wasn't able to buy one canteen of Guinness. Had to purchase the whole half dozen pack. And then I used a lager instead. It tasted horrible!!! I doctored it up with spices, fifty-fifty salsa. Nosotros did not care for this. I'll go back to making it with wine and scarlet potatoes, spices. Major thwarting on St. Patrick'south Day!!
08/03/2011
This stew is flat and tasteless. Needs seasoning badly. Also add some other onion
03/22/2011
I finely chopped a bit of bacon, browned it, and removed to brown the beef in the salary drippings. And I used almost three TBS tomato paste. I brought to a simmer on the stovetop and then cooked in 350-degree oven for about two hours. My stew was very thick without the cornstarch, and I don't care for that texture in my soupts and stews, and then I omitted. Information technology was so thick that I actually needed to add a splash more beef broth, and I also added a splash of Guinness (simply to reinforce the flavor a scrap) and some frozen peas when I removed from the rut. Oh, and to make sure the stew wasn't biting from the Guinness, I added about a TBS of minced raisins earlier putting in the oven. It may not be traditional, but it'southward perfect for u.s. and very good on a cold rainy day.
03/20/2007
This was pretty adept, and a nice change from Corned Beef and Cabbage (which I personally tin can't stand up) for St Patrick's Day. It really wasn't anything special though - it just tasted similar beef stew to me. It really needs some seasoning though. Salt and pepper and probably something else too (can't think of what.) I'd brand information technology again, and my (Irish-American) fiance liked it, and so 4 stars.
03/21/2011
This was pretty good, the stout soaked into the meat reaaaaal nicely. Does need some kind of salt or spice, though. I forgot to add the cornstarch and water at the end but information technology turned out nice and thick anyway. //ryAn
03/25/2008
A pretty standard stew, but the lycopersicon esculentum paste and beer add a nice twang. Definitely needs salt and pepper. Served mine in "Bread bowls" from this site on St. Patty'southward day and everyone loved it. Bonus: There are five beers left over to help you lot wash information technology downward. Since information technology's in the sauce, it pairs well.
01/11/2011
O my goodness this is the best beef stew ever. What a rich and delightful broth. YUM YUM
01/06/2011
This stew is delicious! We didn't have any Guinness on hand, then we just used extra beef broth. I followed the suggestion of many reviewers and added parsley, italian seasoning, and thyme. My husband is in love with this stew!
03/20/2009
I made this for a St. Patricks Twenty-four hours dejeuner at work and only change I made was adding cabbage. I cooked it all dark in my roaster and the next morning it was perfect! Anybody at work raved about this recipe and I went home for the first fourth dimension (non dessert wise) with an empty pan! Thanks for sharing.
12/23/2010
only fabricated a pot, very good and tasty!i used what i had on mitt. i sub'd tomato plant sauce i just made for spaghetti a few days ago for tomato paste, probably a little short on beefiness as i ate some a day agone, was a organic grass fed chuck roast cow,i used a bottle of O.Five. for the beer,my potatoes were probably medium sized,i guessed on the carrots,i used the biggest onion i had which was probably a good medium. the beer makes information technology! was groovy smelling while cooking. i brought to a boil and turned down to a simmer until i could pierce the vegetables with a fork then let sit flame off for a while and ate 2 bowls & with 2 slices of whole wheat bread, delicious,my pot was pretty filled up and then will last a few days i'thousand sure.i seared the beef 1st with flour blanket then added it and finish cooking with the rest, trim as much fat as you lot tin off the beef and so you dont have a slick on the surface. turned out keen, the liquid did'nt thicken up enuff but is good to drink like soup. too i used craven broth as i did'nt have beefiness.
12/08/2007
Great bones recipe. Just needs a few spices added.
03/23/2011
Very good and piece of cake. Followed recipe to the letter, except I merely used v potatoes considering I was running out of room in the crockpot. Dipped with crusty bread. My three year one-time son loved it!
03/29/2010
This was delicious! I was looking for a replacement for our usual Corned Beef and Cabbage St. Patty'south dinner, and this one was a consummate hit with the family. Yum!
05/21/2011
My three year old had three helpings of this! I used Newcastle ale since that'south what nosotros had in the firm. I also opted to cook this on the stove top because I got caught up doing laundry in the morning time and didn't get it started in time to brand it in the slow cooker.
03/19/2012
I made this for a St. Patty's Day political party this weekend and it was great. I used a bottle of Newcastle...only personal preference, as I don't like Guinness. Definitely exercise non be afraid to add your own seasonings...information technology needs information technology. After some salt, pepper, parsley, rosemary and a little garlic powder information technology tasted fantastic. Thank you!
07/14/2013
I made some changes though. one) I didn't have any stout (apparently I got drunk last dark.) but I did have a bottle of Red Claw Audible. (Slightly hoppy lighter ale.) ii) I don't peel potatoes. I like the peels, and it seems pointless/wasteful. I cut them into thick slices. 3) I doubled the broth.(On accident. Slightly hung over.) four) I fabricated a night roux instead of using cornstarch. This gave it a slight roasted nutty flavor. I added this about an 60 minutes prior to finish. v) I put a dash of liquid smoke in there. The stew came out awesome. I cooked it for vi hours on high in the crock pot. The changes I made, like all changes, were due to preference and necessity. Many times when I am looking for a recipe, I don't want to run to the store and and then I make substitutions. I think the spirit of the recipe remained intact, and this stew has a potent spirit indeed.
03/sixteen/2010
I made this concluding yr for st. patty'due south twenty-four hour period Wow 1 of the best stews i accept always made and had!!!! My friend is from Liverpool, England and would become to Ireland oftentimes, he said the meal tasted homely. I said is that good or bad because in America homely is bad. He laughed and said no it tastes like something my mum would make. :)
12/xviii/2011
This was easy and very delicious.
03/27/2009
Awesome recipe. This stew, for you lot Southerners, is fabulous with southern style cornbread. Also, reserve some of the broth in which to dip or crumble the cornbread for a late evening snack. The beer really makes the difference.
10/17/2010
Loved this recipe! Cook-in-your-oral cavity beefiness and just a fantastic stew. We made it with Irish soda breadstuff for a nifty fall meal.
03/14/2011
I made this stew for dinner tonight, and it was admittedly delicious! I had 2nd thoughts as I was putting it together and realized in that location were no spices! I used tenderizer on the meat and a little table salt and pepper but other than that I fabricated as directed. Tastes great! Simply thing I'd alter is possibly adding a niggling more broth, simply it was a nice thick hearty stew. And the meat was very tender. Great recipe, thanks!
03/19/2007
Very good stew! I cooked mine 6 hrs in a crock pot on high. I thought it was a tinsy bit mushy, but that could have merely been the fashion I cooked it. The meat was delicious and the guinness really added to the flavour. I added about a 1/iii head of cabbage and some salt/pepper. Mine was most a trivial banal. I couldn't imagine eating it without a picayune seasoning. Overall? Great!
03/15/2011
I'1000 not sure what went wrong where, simply I had the entire recipe cooking for over 12 hrs and the potatoes, and even some of the onions only WOULD Not COOK. Maybe that was more than my cookers fault, but yet. Despite delicious gravy (Which I spiced upward with garlic poweder, pepper, salt, seasoning table salt, and cajun seasoning), I think I'll try for a casserole bake next time.
03/07/2012
Guinness from a bottle or can usually seems to accept a bit of a metallic taste which comes through in the finished stew. If I make this blazon of stew over again, I will effort using another beer, probably a Left Manus Milk Stout.
03/xx/2011
So easy to make and succulent. Did not demand cornstarch to thicken. Did need to add spices to assistance with flavor. Will make again.
03/26/2014
My family loved this stew, I served it with some irish soda breadstuff. This is now my goto beef stew recipe.
03/19/2011
This stew was merely OK--nothing infrequent. I brought it to a potluck and only half was eaten. My hubby also wasn't crazy about this stew.
01/19/2015
I'grand non certain how this has then many adept ratings. Information technology had absolutely no season. I ended up taking information technology out of the ho-hum cooker and putting information technology on the stove for an hour just so I could take my time adding spices to make it edible. I ended up adding a cup and a one-half of blood-red vino also because there wasn't nearly enough broth for the amount of meat and vegetables there.
06/26/2014
wonderful recipe! note to people who have still to try this, looks tin be deceiving because frankly this is probable to be one of the all-time stews you will eat. i added more vegetables than the recipe called for like corn, peas, carrots, and celery. i too added red pepper flakes and rosemary to spice it up a bit. the only thing i changed was the amount of beer in the recipe. i used well-nigh half less. will be making this again :) :) :)
x/13/2006
This was so good. I added just a chip more of the beer and it was awsome.
03/20/2008
HAD TO USE A SAMUEL ADAMS BEER. COOKED IN THE PRESSURE COOKER. VERY TENDER AND YUMMY
02/06/2012
FANTASTIC recipe!!! Was extremely tasty and the consistency was fabulous. I did add some celery and mushrooms as well (merely a personal preference) as well equally a bit of salt & pepper. Cheers so much for posting this wonderful recipe :)
03/18/2006
I fabricated this stew for St. Paddy'south Mean solar day, and information technology went over very well...we had no left-overs, and even my 2 1/2 yr old loved it. I volition definitely make it again, although next time I will add salt and pepper.
04/06/2010
This was a cracking stew, very easy to prepare which what I was looking for on St.Patty's day morning. It was a big hit with the guys, meat was super tender. I thought information technology was lacking in flavor, information technology needed spicing up. Salt, pepper, herbs are definite simple but necessary additions to make this even better. I also added celery. Not greasy at all, not sure if other reviewers are using too much oil and/or are pouring the meat with the oil into the crockpot? I will make once again merely with more than spices.
03/12/2011
I had Bud on hand and I added a few frozen peas to add a little color. It was wonderful!
03/18/2011
Liked the combination of ingredients but it definitely needs seasoning. Add your own seasonings to your gustation simply keep it IRISH!
02/27/2007
This was my first slow cooker recipe and so, I was a picayune nervous. Information technology was so easy and the beer fabricated a nice unique taste. I ended upwardly using only 5 murphy's. I would non have had plenty room!
03/eighteen/2012
The stew was crawly. I found that I didn't need the cornstarch though, the thickness was perfect. I did add some oil from my preserved jalapeno picks that gave it a bit of seize with teeth and fabricated information technology a family hit!
03/17/2008
All I can say is 'WOW'! I beloved beingness able to use my crockpot for times when we have potlucks at work. Today is St. Patrick'south Day and some other gal in the office ever makes a fabulous corned beef with cabbage, potatoes & carrots - and then, I always try to detect something that fits the theme while existence different. This was information technology - and, is it always good! With all the food we had, I saw people going back for seconds and, to me, that'due south the ultimate compliment! The just thing I'll add side by side fourth dimension is a touch of table salt. Otherwise, it's very good!
03/17/2015
Easy, but a little too tomatoey.
03/xx/2010
Pretty good! I had every intention of making an "Irish" meal on St. Paddy's Day, but.... Unfortunately, I had no "steam" this week (I had a few VERY early mornings, and from what I know well-nigh myself, I am merely Non a morning person lol!). I FINALLY got around to prepping everything by Friday., then I made this last nighttime. While my fiance & I both enjoyed this, I do think I prefer my stand up-by stew recipe a piffling better. Yous know, just the basics - a little ruby-red wine, a LOT of herbs, potatoes, carrots, celery, peas, etc. Having said that, we both enjoyed the tang from the beer (used Guinness stout) & plant this to be very authentic. In that location are quite a few Irish stew recipes on hither that "claim" authenticity, but unless Irish beer is one of the ingredients, I just don't feel information technology is. To be a trivial different, I omitted the potatoes from my stew & instead, served over mashed ones. I used more than carrots & an Actress lg. onion & upped the amt. of meat slightly to compensate. I followed Mayelle'south sugg. and add. one 1/2 T (all I had left) dried rosemary, a t of dried parsley, 1/2 t Italian seasoning, a pinch of thyme, fresh basis pepper (to taste) & a t of garlic powder (I'm non certain if Mayelle add. fresh + powder or only 1 t fresh, so I add together. both!). I did not salt since I add together. ~ 1 t seasoned salt to my flour. Served w/ fresh baked crusty caraway rye bread (from my grocer's bakery) & stout to wash it all downwardly...mmmm.... Thx. for sharing! :-)
03/21/2008
I rated this three stars considering nosotros ate it but no one loved it. I followed the suggestion of Mayelle to give it more flavor, but 2 tablespoons of rosemary is style to much. Everything else composite nicely. If I fabricated this again I would cut the rosemary down.
03/19/2011
Declicious.
10/09/2012
I fixed this yesterday for my hubby. It filled my 6 quart irksome cooker full. It was so hearty and tasty. I had nearly iii quarts left over and took some to a neighbor and put some in the freezer (for our college kid). Both my married man and the neighbor loved it. This is for sure a keeper and will be cooked several times over the libation conditions. 1 thing.. side by side time I am going to add some peas to it for extra veggies.
03/15/2009
This is an awesome recipe. Took it to a work role and had none left over! Only thing I added to the recipe was a few dashes of rosemary, thyme and pepper. Delicious!
04/01/2010
I found the recipe greasy. Next time I'll make it the day earlier, refrigerate, remove hardened grease, then add together the cornstarch when reheating. I also added some common salt and pepper, thyme, and worchestershire sauce.
04/08/2014
Ok
03/17/2010
I beloved this Recipe. It'south so easy and and then very yummy !!!!
03/17/2014
My favorite beef stew!
08/23/2014
It was adept but I found the tomato paste a little overwhelming. I added 2 tsps of Worcester sauce. Next time I will add more than beef broth and a scrap more of the Guinness.
02/17/2015
This is the first fourth dimension I always made Irish stew, followed the recipe exactly and information technology came out great. Had some Guinness so what better for an Irish Strew. Didn't accept to add the corn starch, only needed a picayune more seasoning. Used some McCormick Montreal steak seasoning and parsley, table salt and pepper. Will make again.
02/18/2009
Really enjoyed this stew every bit part of our St. Patrick'south Twenty-four hours/Jump Break in the Mountains celebration! Only might consider making it a tradition!
08/16/2012
This was wonderful Irish Stew. My girl asked me to make it once more soon. I did add together some corn celery and mushrooms and some fresh thyme and oregano. Will definitely be making this again.
01/09/2011
Very adept!
10/28/2014
Absolutely delicious!!! I've made this twice (considering I proceed forgetting that I have information technology saved) and each time I get in, every one wants the recipe. E'er a classic for the fall and winter time.
12/15/2008
Groovy receipe. Next time with spices, I'd rate it five stars.
03/sixteen/2007
I followed this recipe as is, with the exception of adding some parsley as I saw in other Iris Stew Recipes. The londer it cooks in the crokpot the more tender the beef and vegetabes (at least ten hours). I served at a party. Everyone really enjoyed. Information technology is better the adjacent day! I added salt to mine equally I retrieve it needed a trivial flavor boost. I would make once again for the holiday. Information technology does sense of taste a picayune different than a traditional American beefiness stew. oh - I did use Guinness Beer - it is Irish gaelic Stew after all!!
05/x/2008
This is a family fave on cold winters nights! Add together a loaf of freshly broiled bread and the whole family is content.
03/16/2008
This stew is very skillful! My family loved it! The Irish beer added smashing flavour, as did the love apple paste. My merely problem with this stew is the high cal and fat. It'south a very heavy stew and you tin can experience those 26.6 thou of fat after eating it. Merely information technology is worth the taste!
04/17/2010
I used this recipe for the first time this yr as I Really wanted Irish Stew. A church here sells homemade Irish Stew and I merely couldn't get there during their hours. I didn't think I could ever make information technology every bit good as theirs. But this recipe was Information technology! The simply thing I did different was use a 1 lb. bag of baby carrots to save fourth dimension.
03/17/2007
This is succulent. I tend to mess with the recipes just a trivial . . .I added a couple handfuls of dry beans/lentil mix, cabbage, fresh mushrooms and doubled the beer content. I didn't have beef broth so I used a packet of beef seasoning with 2 cups of water. The result was a very rich and well seasoned goop. Will make again!
03/sixteen/2010
Honey this recipe, my go to stew
03/twenty/2009
This was the outset Irish Stew I had always fabricated and it turned out wonderfully! Very piece of cake and boy did the house aroma good. Thanks for such a good recipe.
03/17/2009
This recipe is the best! My family raves over it. Easy to brand too, yous simply put information technology in the crock pot and forget nigh it. 5 stars!
03/05/2011
Information technology is still simmering but I can tell already that it will be a big hit tomorrow for our St. Patty luncheon. I didnt really measure out the veggies or the meat just I have a nice big pot and it tastes wonderful. I used venison instead of beef - that might not exist very Irish but that is okay because nosotros are not Irish either :-) Cheers for sharing.
11/03/2007
Pretty good. The beer adds overnice flavor. We did add extra spices! We also decided to make it in the pressure cooker. Information technology took no fourth dimension at all!!!!
06/ten/2014
This was and so piece of cake and delicious!! I added some mushrooms the final 10 minutes and put it over rice. Great recipe!
03/21/2010
fabricated this for an Eagles costless St Patty's Day celebration...it was a hitting...our members loved it! thanks for sharing
09/21/2012
awesome sense of taste...
03/18/2010
Spectactular! I only made this for St. Patty'due south twenty-four hour period and both my mom and hubby loved it! I just made 2 changes: 1) I added two chopped parsnips 2) I didn't bother with the corn startch and water, equally the stew thickened quite nicely without it.
09/08/2013
Totally authentic! Tastes simply similar the Irish Stew we ate at the Haemorrhage Equus caballus in Dublin, Ireland. Added 1tsp of rosemary, 2tsp of Worcestershire Sauce and seasoned the beef with common salt and pepper when coating information technology with the flour. I also added an additional ane cup of Beef Broth because information technology was as well thick, as well as a Knorr Beefiness Stock tub.
03/17/2013
I found that my boring cooker wouldn't hold all the veggies in the recipe. I used half the irish potato'south & half the carrots. Everything else stayed the same. Absolutely amazing!!!! This dish is my new St. Patty's Twenty-four hours tradition!!!!!
eleven/09/2012
Beginning fourth dimension trying a slow melt recipe, and it was so easy to do, and tasted astonishing. Although I didn't use Guinness as it said. Instead I tried a bottle of Kona Brewing Company's Pipeline Porter, and it was even so a huge hit.
03/17/2007
Very tasty I have friends coming over soon and I am sure it volition go the thumbs up sign. Didn't have the leeks oops just nonetheless wonderful.
04/29/2009
Very adept and very good for St. Patrick'due south Solar day!
03/sixteen/2013
My girlfriend loved it - the others complimented me on information technology. I, however was non blown away. Although it cooked on low for 8+ hrs - the meat was non as tender as I'd like. I added all sorts of spices to 'taste it up' - all the same lacking - can't give it a 5*. Don't know that I'd practise information technology once more.
03/15/2014
This recipe was great. It tasted fifty-fifty better the next solar day. I used a citrus dark beer which gave information technology a little zing in the gustatory modality. Whole family unit loved information technology. Even the little ones.
08/13/2017
I love Irish stew & this is a groovy recipe. I followed information technology nigh exactly, only did add some fresh thyme. I highly recommend -- use Yukon potatoes and so they'll hold up in the stew. My married man loved it likewise.
03/18/2017
I made this tonight for St Patty's twenty-four hours! It turned out awesome. I added a little body of water common salt only it had great flavor. Loved it.
06/21/2018
Just like 2 beloved stew to be great
03/eighteen/2017
Fabricated as directed. Ended up cooking on low for a few extra hours- went out for twenty-four hour period. Dish was watery and banal, added extra beef bouillon and cornstarch and end before serving.
03/14/2019
instead of putting in slow cooker for 6-8 hrs I put in my pressure cooker for 6 minutes (everything else the same). It was succulent!
03/31/2013
This recipe needs seasoning!! I added salt and pepper and a bay foliage. I made a mistake of pouring another can of Guinness to add more liquid, information technology turned out too bitter for me. Next time I will endeavor more beef broth. Good recipe, simple enough to give it another try simply I will keep tweaking it.
02/01/2019
Perfect, I had my recipes my mom gave me that came from Ireland packed away. Wanted to cheque I was not forgetting annihilation. This is perfect, the only difference is we add celery.
10/thirteen/2015
Taking a tip from others here, I added a tbsp bouquet garni, 2 bay leaves, table salt and pepper as well as some garlic powder. Will try worcestershire sauce adjacent time because it was withal a bit bland. Beef was super tender and veggies were perfect. Volition def make this again.
01/xiii/2016
Afterwards a trip to Ireland with friends, nosotros came habitation peckish the authentic Irish stew nosotros had there. I institute this recipe and information technology was easy enough that I gave it a effort. It's delicious! I ever use grass-fed beef (and so tender) and Guinness beer. Not quite the same as the real matter, only close enough for united states!
10/27/2019
fabricated some small changes...salt and peppered the meat....instead of guinness used one-half a tall male child can of Dales Pale Ale IPA....added a ane/2 of a cup water half fashion through...cooked in a dutch oven over ii.five hrs....served over Egg noodles...delish
08/12/2019
Yummy! Big hit at an International themed potluck. I added parsnips for fun. Husband loved the flavor added past the Guinness!
